The museum’s educational focus

The El Paso Holocaust Museum teaches Holocaust history to combat prejudice and intolerance through education, community outreach, and cultural activities. Its permanent exhibition uses multimedia galleries to follow life in Europe before the Nazi Party, the party’s rise, propaganda, Kristallnacht, ghettos, deportations by rail, concentration camps, liberation, rescuers, remembrance, and El Paso Holocaust survivors.

Gallery materials are presented in English and Spanish. The museum also offers Dimensions in Testimony, a conversational experience developed by the USC Shoah Foundation.

The museum’s origins go back to 1984, when Holocaust survivor Henry Kellen began a small display at the Jewish Community Center. It opened in its first full-fledged form in 1994. An electrical fire destroyed that original museum in October 2001, and it reopened in January 2008.

Planning a thoughtful visit

Planning a thoughtful visit

Set aside room to move through the exhibition at a considered pace. Its subject matter spans persecution, deportation, concentration camps, liberation, and remembrance, so you can pause between galleries rather than trying to rush through the history.

For a self-guided visit, plan to begin at least 30 minutes before closing. The museum invites schools and groups to schedule guided tours; contact the museum ahead of time if you are arranging a group visit.
