What does Chamizal National Memorial commemorate?

What does Chamizal National Memorial commemorate?

Chamizal National Memorial commemorates the resolution of a U.S.–Mexico border dispute through diplomacy. The National Park Service describes the Chamizal Convention as a successful diplomatic resolution to a disagreement over a plot of land of less than 500 acres.

The memorial sits on the international border, across from Ciudad Juárez. Its grounds cover about 55 acres, with walking and bike trails, picnic areas, an amphitheater, and a cultural center. For a different perspective on the name and park across the border, Parque Público Federal El Chamizal is in Juárez.

How do you get from Ciudad Juárez to the memorial?

How do you get from Ciudad Juárez to the memorial?

You must cross the international border to reach the memorial in El Paso from Ciudad Juárez. From Istay Hotel Ciudad Juarez, the memorial is about a 25-minute drive, or about a 54-minute walk. Those travel times do not remove the need to account for the border crossing.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports that the El Paso Paso del Norte, Bridge of the Americas, and Ysleta ports operate 24 hours a day. Check CBP’s live listing for current lane status and wait times before choosing a crossing.

The memorial is along Paisano Drive near I-10, Loop 375 (Border Highway), and U.S. 54. Pay attention to route directions: the National Park Service cautions that some roads in the area may lead into Mexico.

Sun Metro also has a stop at Paisano Drive and South San Marcial Street, at the park’s northwest corner and within walking distance of facilities.

How do you get to and around the memorial?

How do you get to and around the memorial?

Driving, transit, and walking are all possible ways to reach the grounds, but parking is for park visitors—not for people leaving to walk across the bridge to Juárez.

The main parking area has 162 spaces, including five accessible spaces. A second paved lot on the south side is near the comfort station and picnic areas.

Overnight parking is not permitted, and vehicles left when the memorial closes will be towed. If you’re visiting Mexico, the National Park Service recommends commercial parking lots about 1 mile west in downtown El Paso instead.

From the parking area, the Cultural Center’s front doors are about 500 feet along an uncovered walkway. Designated accessible parking, crosswalks, and curb cut-outs are available. You can request a wheelchair to borrow inside the Cultural Center; its restrooms and water fountain are wheelchair accessible.

What can you see and do on the grounds?

What can you see and do on the grounds?

The memorial’s outdoor areas include red gravel loop trails, picnic areas, and an esplanade. The National Park Service describes the trails as wide, hard-packed, and gently graded, though weather can make some sections rough. The esplanade offers views of the “Nuestra Herencia” mural, the Bridge of the Americas, and much of the memorial grounds.

Leashed pets are allowed on the trails; you’re responsible for cleaning up after them. Picnic tables and grills are limited and available first-come, first-served. Glass containers, piñatas, and confetti eggs are not allowed on park grounds.

The Cultural Center contains a theater, exhibit areas, a park store, and a visitor information desk. Theater events scheduled outside regular visitor-service hours may mean those services are unavailable, so plan your visit around the center’s schedule if you want to go inside. The grounds can also be part of a one-day route near iStay Hotel Ciudad Juárez.

When are the memorial and Cultural Center open?

The memorial grounds and entrance gates are open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; entry by foot or vehicle is permitted only while the gates are open. The Cultural Center’s regular visitor-service hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., and it is closed Sunday and Monday.

The memorial is open year-round, but winter weather can cause periodic closures, and storms or other events may temporarily close roads or areas. It is also closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. For current hours, access conditions, and event schedules, check the official site before you go.
